- Forced tool use returns an error. If your code uses
tool_choiceto force a specific tool call, that pattern no longer works. Refactor to let the model choose tools naturally usingtool_choice: autowith strict mode, or use turn-scoped system messages to name the tool. - Earlier models can't read Fable 5.1's thinking blocks. Fable 5.1 reads thinking blocks from older Claude versions, but older versions can't read Fable 5.1's blocks. If you're chaining models (Fable 5.1 → Opus 5 for fallback), the thinking context is lost. You'll need to re-plan without that reasoning.
- Editing earlier turns invalidates thinking blocks. If your application lets users edit conversation history, all thinking blocks after the edit are invalidated and must be regenerated. This is an anti-distillation measure.
